As part of a week-long festival celebrating Edinburgh's libraries, Louise Welsh , well-known Scottish author, took part in an online chat session. She answered questions from the public on both her published works and on her particular area of interest, Robert Louis Stevenson. The event helped to raise awareness of the online library reference service, Enquire , and the opportunity it provides the public to direct their questions to librarians-the trusted custodians of knowledge-through the medium of online chat. The session was sponsored by OCLC and Enquire, the People's Network service provided by OCLC to support nationwide online library reference enquiries. Enquire is currently staffed from more than 80 public libraries across the United Kingdom, including Edinburgh Central Library . Asked about her reaction to being involved in an online chat event, Ms. Welsh said: "I found the experience exhilarating and thoroughly enjoyed the chance to chat with people who didn't have an opportunity to attend the Festival of Libraries in person, but nevertheless had the desire to engage with a 'literary' event. I'll certainly be using this forum myself in the future to ask questions of librarians." Enquire is one of several groups worldwide that are locally branding a customized version of QuestionPoint , the software that powers the service. Developed by the Library of Congress and OCLC, QuestionPoint is bringing the professionalism of librarianship to Web reference assistance and helping librarians move one of their traditional strengths, the face-to-face reference interview, into the digital age. View story >> Networked families Parents and spouses are using the Internet and cell phones to create a "new connectedness" that builds on remote connections and shared Internet experiences The Internet and cell phones have become central components of modern family life. Among all household types, the traditional nuclear family has the highest rate of technology usage and ownership. The Pew survey found that households with a married couple and minor children are more likely than other household types-such as single adults, homes with unrelated adults or couples without children-to have cell phones and use the Internet. The survey also shows that these high rates of technology ownership affect family life. In particular, cell phones allow family members to stay more regularly in touch even when they are not physically together. Moreover, many members of married-with-children households view material online together. Here are the responses to the green library bags inquiry. The majority of answers involved "do-it-yourself" projects, namely collecting used supermarket plastic bags. These are either collected by staff or brought in by patrons. Not exactly a green solution but cost effective nevertheless. Sources for inexpensive ($1.50 - 2.00) "green" bags include Janway and Highsmith (Upstart). It was suggested that we contact area chains such as Kroger to find out their source. Several answers included Better Containers Company, which makes the plastic bags we now use. One library charges a nominal fee for these bags. If the person decides not to make the purchase, they are given a used supermarket bag. They have sold few of the better container bags since. Yet another library actually bought the bags for $1.00/each at the local Marsh store until they started imprinting the store name on the bag. As far as selling the bags, some have the Friends of the Library do it and some handle it themselves. If you do it yourself, ISL development office sent me this web link to examine the legal procedures (mainly sales tax): http://www.in.gov/library/files/Sales_in_Libraries.pdf Thanks to the many respondents; it has helped us a great deal and hopefully it will be of help to anyone looking to "Go Green" (as a Michigan alum, I prefer to "Go Blue"). Since 1970, the United States Forest Service has appointed one of our country's National Forests to provide the Capitol Christmas Tree. The Capitol Christmas Tree Program web site provides a detailed history of the program and of what the appointed National Forest (and its home State) actually provides for the ceremony . For example, in addition to providing a near-perfect 60+ foot tall tree for the Capitol, 4000-5000 weather-proof handmade ornaments and 60-70 companion trees (between 6 and 25 feet tall) must also be provided. This year's Capitol Christmas Tree is a 78' subalpine fir that came from the Bitterroot National Forest in Montana. The lighting ceremony took place on Tuesday December 2, 2008. When told to give up her bus seat to a white man, Rosa Parks refused. Her actions, and the protests that occurred at her trial, inadvertently sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott , which can also be considered the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement. The Bus Boycott soon became more than just a local issue - it thrust the Civil Rights Movement into the public eye and made Martin Luther King, Jr. a national figure. Thanks to the courageous actions of Ms. Parks and others, Americans can enjoy the freedoms today that are often taken for granted. The federal government has websites and resources that can be invaluable tools for learning about U.S. History as well as all cultures. The government provides links to websites about a variety of cultures within the United States. Topics include history and genealogy, and even information for new citizens. The National Archives holds Rosa Parks' arrest records , and provides links to their images on their website. If you have questions or need assistance on civil rights locally, the Indiana Civil Rights Commission offers resources and suppor t as well. It was this day that Japan attacked the US Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, destroying the U.S.S Arizona , capsizing the U.S.S. Oklahoma , and doing tremendous damage to many other ships and aircraft. More than 2,300 Americans were killed that day. Following the attack, the United States was thrust into war with Japan. Two days later, Germany and Italy declared war on the United States and the country was now fully immersed in World War II. The National Park Service offers a lesson plan for teaching the story of the attacks on Pearl Harbor. The site is interesting because it includes links to maps, data charts, and readings on the topic. There are also images and links to outside resources. For a more detailed history, see Naval Station Pearl Harbor's website . It also includes current information on the base as well as tourist information. In addition, you can go to the Naval Historical Center's Online Library , which has photographs and a short description of the attacks. Finally, the Library of Congress has a collection of materials relating to Pearl Harbor. Some images available online include the Naval dispatch announcing the attack and links to "man on the street" oral histories, recorded just days after the bombing. Take a peek at its new layout. On the left-hand side, you'll find the standard "Home" and "Information for" sections typical of the IN.gov websites. A little bit lower, you'll see Helpful Links, including School Data and Academic Standards. On the right-hand side, a Find it Fast search features "School Snapshot" information about Indiana's schools -- searchable by school, city, county (with map), and data criteria. The snapshots contain accreditation, corporation, enrollment, principal, ethnicity, free lunch, ISTEP data, and more for each school. Also check the center of the website for Latest Headlines and Events, which today features the Learn Green, Life Green effort for educators, students, parents, and the community to learn environmental responsibility. Feeling out-of-balance now that they're over? Stressed because of all the bad news being thrown at us? It's the age-old $64,000 question: How do we achieve balance in our lives in the "Daytimer -- Blackberry -- email -- voicemail -- fax -- cell phone -- pager world" in which we live? How do we remove ourselves from the onslaught of bad news we're subjected to every day? Maybe it's time to make time for YOU and attend this eye-opening workshop, where you'll learn how to take back control of your life. In the second session, you'll have an opportunity to reflect on what is most important in your life and decide how you're going to make time for those priorities. And in the final session of the series, you'll find an extensive list of ways you, too, can return balance to your life. We'll be going lower case on the 18th but from the 11th through the 18th we will continue to loan to members of ALI. No, we're not doing a Grinch thing, we're doing a reverse Grinch thing. Normally we'd need to go lover case for everyone on the 11th but because INCOLSA just built a GAC of Indiana Academics (IALI) we can continue to loan to our ALI buddies and use InfoExpress for delivery for that last week. Yup, you can build deflection for everyone EXCEPT a profiled group and INCOLSA put one together for us setting a land speed record (Thanks, Jeanne!). Naturally it would be better if we could deflect or except based on custom holdings but until that's in place this is going to get the job done. If you're an ALI member then you SHOULD be in ALI. On behalf of the ILF Board of Directors, I want to publicly thank the ILF Executive Director search committee members. John Robson, chair, and his committee went above and beyond in their work. We want to thank them all for a job well done. Last night the ILF Board met for their regularly scheduled meeting. On our agenda was the discussion about the Executive Director search. After a lengthy discussion the board voted to reopen the search. As we are all too aware a lot has happened in the six months since the job was posted. Both the economic and political environments currently are going to have a big impact on ILF in the future. With that in mind, the Board felt we should continue the search. Cheryl Truesdell, incoming ILF President, and the ILF Board will be working over the weeks ahead to get a new timeline and process in place. We intend to move swiftly, but also be diligent in our search. Linda Kolb retires as of February 1st from the ILF office. However, we have contracted with Linda to remain ?on call? during the transition. Jason Gilbert, ILF Program Manager, will assume the role of Interim Office Manager after Linda?s retirement until the new Executive Director is hired. This structure will ensure that ILF will continue to keep moving forward as we support our members during this time of change. Thank you all for your support of the Indiana Library Federation! For librarians and their patrons, from the Indiana State Library. HOOSIERS CARE PROGRAM In these trying economic times, all of us find ourselves needing a little help. Several Indiana agencies have come together to help Hoosiers save money by offering ways to conserve energy and finding ways to help with the cost of mounting utility bills. The Indiana Office of Energy and Defense (OED), the Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA), and the Office of the Utility Consumer Counselor (OUCC) have partnered together to create the Hoosiers Care Program , which highlights energy-saving practices. Most people don't realize the actual savings they can create by taking small steps such as winterizing your home, turning down the thermostat, and performing routine maintenance on your vehicles. Are you committed to doing your part to save money and the environment? The first step is to take the Hoosiers Care Pledge . If you need assistance with any of the topics or suggestions above, please visit the following agencies' websites: Indiana Department of Environmental Management: http://in.gov/idem/ Indiana Office of the Utility Consumer Counselor: http://in.gov/oucc/ Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority: http://www.in.gov/ihcda/ Office of Energy and Defense Development: http://www.in.gov/oed/ SMALLSTEP.GOV Here's an opportunity to take a step toward better health in the coming new year. Both websites contain basic tips on eating healthier, becoming more active, and avoiding harmful substances. The audience is all of us - especially those of us who feel that our busy lives leave little time for a healthy lifestyle. It directs users to tools such as the online Body Mass Index (BMI) calculator on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, the USDA's Food and Nutrition Center, and Create-a-Diet from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. It currently gathers information from over 17,000 law enforcement agencies and publishes it in several annual publications. The most comprehensive is Crime in the United States , which includes crime data for various regions and states and also has arrest and employee information. This information is available to the public - you can find it online from the FBI's website, as early as 1995. For information from earlier years, see your local federal depository library . The data found in the Uniform Crime Reports should only be used for planning and research purposes. It is not designed to be a ranking system of law enforcement agencies. Other statistical reports that are available include Hate Crime Statistics and Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted . These are also available online and in print. The FBI has several publications online that are not necessarily statistical in nature. These include The FBI Strategic Plan 2004-2009 and A Parent's Guide to Internet Safety . However, a lot of that equipment is also accompanied by batteries. While more and more types of electronics now come with rechargeable battery units, many still use disposable batteries. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) has issued a press release offering tips for the proper disposal of batteries. Of course, the best way to limit the number of batteries going to the landfill is to purchase the type that you recharge yourself. However, IDEM also encourages Hoosiers to save and collect batteries, as many waste management facilities will take them and dispose of them properly. IDEM warns that trying to dispose of batteries yourself may result in releasing dangerous chemicals into the environment. Recycle Indiana also offers a list of Electronics Management Service Providers, as well as recycling centers around the state. The site also provides Indiana regulations for recycling and additional tips on recycling electronics. For librarians and their patrons, from the Indiana State Library. VOLUNTARY IDLING PROGRAM As a way for companies to become greener, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) encourages them to enroll in the Voluntary Idling Program (VIP) for Cleaner Air. The goal of VIP is to reduce emissions by cutting down the time that trucks are idling. Idling not only releases exhaust fumes into the air, but also wastes fuel and costs money. IDEM lists several advantages to taking part in this program, in addition to environmental and health factors: being more fuel efficient "reduces petroleum consumption, fuel costs, engine wear and maintenance costs, diesel emissions, and noise." Companies have idling problems to various degrees. Because of this, VIP offers a variety of options - some are free, while others cost thousands of dollars. Ideally, however, the money saved on fuel costs will eventually surpass the cost of the initial program. The program is available to freight carriers, manufacturers and retailers throughout Indiana. VIP includes a list of Facts and Myths about diesel idling. For example, did you know that letting a diesel engine idle is actually worse for an engine than stopping and starting it? The website also includes links for those interested in signing up for the programs, whether they're on the transportation or manufacturing side. In addition, the Environmental Protection Agency also offers many tips for winterizing your lawn equipment . Regardless of the weather, safe driving is a major concern. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the U.S. Department of Transportation sponsor a website called SaferCar.gov . It features a Recall database containing information on vehicles, child restraints, and tires that have been recalled. There are also a 5-Star Safety Rating search, Safe Driving Information organized by topic, and other online resources such as copies of auto safety publications. The Federal Reserve ("The Fed") is the central bank of the United States. It has four principal functions: conduct the nation's monetary policy, supervise and regulate banking institutions, maintain the stability of the financial system and provide financial services to government, depository and foreign official institutions. As a reflection of today's troubled economy, the Fed's website has features for citizens facing foreclosure and for those seeking help with other banking difficulties . There are also links to statistics relating to consumer credit, banks, foreign exchange and business finance. Both historic and current data are available. For more information, visit Fed 101 . It's an interactive site that gives brief descriptions of the history, structure, financial services and more of the Federal Reserve. Visitors to the site can also read about the life of a check or of a dollar bill. Videos of the process are included as well. There are even quizzes and classroom guides available for teachers. For more detailed information, see Federal Reserve System: Purposes and Functions , available in PDF on the Fed's website. Mr. Kniffel's memo offers a thoughtful, even inspiring portrait of the power of libraries to help all Americans fulfill their dreams. It is a good reminder of the wonderful work Hoosier librarians perform every day. All of us at INCOLSA appreciate the opportunity to work alongside you in our common quest: to help Hoosiers learn, work and live better than ever before. Osgood Public Library's new director, Emily Kruse, (who doesn't start until Dec. 29 and doesn't yet have a library email address) has a question which I have offered to post to the list. Osgood is planning a new 5,200 sq. ft. branch building in Milan. Here's the question: What should they expect to pay in architect's fees for a facility that size, including furniture, equipment and fixtures? If you have some recent experience with such a project, you may reply to me and I will pass your responses along to Emily. Thanks much.
